Charles Russell Speechlys continues to bolster Banking & Finance practice with the recruitment of Philip Withey

Charles Russell Speechlys today announces the appointment of Philip Withey as Partner in the Banking & Finance group. His hire follows recent growth in the Firm’s Banking & Finance practice, as well as growth in a number of the firm’s other transactional teams. He will be based in the Cheltenham office.

Philip joins the Firm from Womble Bond Dickinson UK LLP, where he was a Partner specialising in banking and finance for more than 17 years (since 2007). He possesses extensive experience advising both lenders and borrowers on a range of acquisition, asset, structured, development and project finance transactions. Philip also works with key clients on issues relating to derivatives trading, regulatory matters, secondary debt trading, restructuring and sub-participation.

He has a strong track record dealing with complex financing transactions in the energy and financial institutions sectors and has focused on expanding his international work in the energy sector whilst retaining a local South-West market connection.

While at Womble Bond Dickinson UK LLP, his capital markets and derivatives expertise provided specialist support for several financial institution clients, and he was also a member of their transatlantic team advising clients on the impact of LIBOR transition.

Daniel Sullivan, Partner and Head of Banking & Finance, comments:

“Philip’s appointment further strengthens our banking and finance practice and the services we are able to offer our clients. He is an experienced practitioner with a developed practice and brings across a range of skills, experience and contacts that will sit well within the group. We wish him a warm welcome.”

Philip Withey comments:

“The Firm so far seems like a great cultural fit, and I am excited to meet and collaborate with my new colleagues to identify areas of overlap that will benefit all of our clients. I expect to use my experience in real estate finance, corporate finance transactions, client development and transaction management to contribute to the sustainable growth of the practice.”

Philip’s addition to Banking & Finance is particularly timely and follows strong growth, coming just a month after Jeremy Bell joined as a Senior Consultant in the Financial Services Regulation & Funds group. In 2024 so far, our Firm has announced six Partner or Consultant-level hires on the transactional side of the business, in areas including Banking & Finance, Corporate and Financial Services.
