Charles Russell Speechlys expands presence in Greater China with the arrival of Litigation and Dispute Resolution Partner Stephen Chan

Charles Russell Speechlys today announces the appointment of Stephen Chan as a Partner within the Firm’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution department. Stephen joins the Firm’s Hong Kong office from Ince & Co. Hong Kong, and his arrival marks the eighth Partner to join the Firm’s fast-growing international Litigation and Dispute Resolution team this year.

Stephen specialises in complex and high value commercial litigation and arbitration. He has over 15 years of experience handling multi-jurisdictional fraud and asset tracing involving freezing, gagging and other urgent interim injunctive measures which have particular synergies with the growing cryptocurrency and virtual asset area. He is also well versed advising on technology-related disputes, shareholder and company disputes, and contentious employment matters. Many of his cases have an international element and Stephen has a particular tie to the US, Europe and China.

In addition, Stephen has strong capabilities in international arbitration work arising from a broad range of commercial disputes across a range of sectors, including private wealth, financial services and technology. He has experience in most of the world’s leading arbitral seats (including London, Hong Kong, and Singapore) and under the rules of key arbitral institutions (including HKIAC, SIAC, ICC and UNCITRAL rules). Stephen is a committee member of the Law Society of Hong Kong’s Arbitration Committee.

Simon Green, Partner and Head of Asia, comments:

“It is an exciting time for Stephen to be joining the Firm, having recently opened our new office in Singapore, we are primed for continued growth across the region. As a Firm, we are continuing to strengthen the depth and breadth of our international offering across key global markets, and the arrival of Stephen here in Hong Kong is a testament to that ambition.”

Stephen Chan, Partner, adds:

“It is a real pleasure to be joining Charles Russell Speechlys, and I am excited to join the dynamic and well-respected litigation, arbitration, and dispute resolution team. The Firm’s reputation precedes it, and I am excited to collaborate with the wider team across offices, geographies, and divisions.”

Stephen’s appointment follows a raft of recent International Partner hires, namely Vanessa Duff, who joined the Firm’s Family practice in Hong Kong; Commercial Partner, Rebecca Steer, in the United Kingdom; Tax Partner, David Cordova Flores, in Luxembourg; and Tom Snider, Head of International Arbitration, in Dubai.

Stephen is admitted to practice in Hong Kong and is a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand. Stephen speaks fluent English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.
