The i quotes Emma Humphreys on record rent rises in the UK

UK rents have increased at the fastest annual rate since records began seven years ago.

Private rents rose 5.7 per cent year-on-year in September, up from 5.6 per cent in July, the largest annual increase since the Office for National Statistics began collecting data in January 2016.

Emma Humphreys, Partner, provides comment for The i

"The housing market is in need of radical reform. Rents are climbing, homeowners are struggling, and landlords are being squeezed out of the market due to rising mortgage rates.

"The fundamental issue is the significant imbalance between supply and demand, as governments have consistently failed to tackle the under-supply of housing.

"Labour’s pledge to build one and a half million new homes in five years signals a positive intention, but there is no indication that any political party understands how to work with developers. Commitments and policies aren’t enough on their own – we need to see real action, through building more homes to fix the housing crisis."
